Things that were different today

A man walked up to our car at an intersection selling candy, newspapers and . . . a turtle.

The turtle was not being sold as a pet. It was being sold as dinner.

Having recently hung out with the turtles in Maui, this makes me so sad!!! :(

Why is that so different from the South? What? People aren't supposed to eat turtles? Then why did God make them so delicious?

UCMama is just wrong.

Did you try to pet the man's take out menu and he yelled at you? How exactly did you learn it was for dinner?

Nobody (meaning nobody, not Nobody) is supposed to KNOW that turtles are delicious. Man was not mean to eat cute animals. Thank you.

I knew it was for dinner because there is also a turtle tank in the meat section at the grocery store. Like those lobster tanks, you know? Only filled with cute friendly little painted turtles. I don't go in that section any more.
However, when I mentioned it to my friend in the car, who has lived here for 2 years, she was SHOCKED to learn that they were to be eaten. She had thought, all these years, that they just happened to be selling pet turtles in the meat section.

In her defense, they do put them in a little plastic bag with water, just like pet fish in the states.

Your turtle story reminds me of a rabbit story. A friend with a green thumb told Kim that she should use all the rabbit raisins deposited by the bunny residing in our backyard and use them for fertilizer on the tomato plants she helped Kim plant (in pots which have to be kept out of reach of the rabbit). However, the rabbit poop can't be put directly in the tomato pots, but rather we're suppose to soak the rabbit poop in water to make rabbit poop tea, which then you pour onto the plants. Yum. Stay tuned to see whether the tomatoes thrive or die.
